Veeranari to be ignored – Kanakalatha Baruva
(17 year old immortal hero of Assam)
Thirty years Venkaiah Naidu
Hey young women and young men…! you are all powerful to lead. Colour the earth with your blood. Make this world beautiful with the strength of promise that comes from the depths of the heart. Let your warm blood flow over the earth like a sunshine.
The words of renowned Assami writer and freedom fighter Sri Karambir Nabin Chandra Bordolai have inspired many youths towards the Swarajya war.
As I am approaching the 75-year milestone of Swarajya, I am sharing my attitude as a social media platform about the brave women freedom fighters to be ignored. In fact, I continue this series of articles paying tribute to the memory of those who played a priceless role in their heroic fight in the Indian Swarajya battle.
Despite many great people participating in the Swarajya battle from the Indian subcontinent, the details, courage, and patriotism of those martyrs, unfortunately our history has given a blurred place. They all say very little about them.
Today, I will inform you about 17 year old heroic Kanakalata Barua of Assam. As a part of the Quit India movement, many responded to the Door Die (Achieve or Die) slogan given by Mahatma Gandhi, irrespective of religion, region, gender, age discrimination, social statuses. Meanwhile, with the courage of a plant to fly the national flag in a police station, the history hero Kanakalata Baruvadi who died in the attempt to face guns.
On 1924 December 22, she was born to Mrs. Karneshwari and Sri Krishnakanth Barua couple in Gohpur, lost her parents at the age of 13 She had to stop studying in third grade to take care of her brother and sister despite being in a joint family. Her ancestors say they were ministers in the Ahoom Kings court.
She, who was attracted to the Swarajya movement in her childhood, has increased her fury against the foreign rule. The brutal torture of famous local leaders Sri Cheniram Das, Sri Mahim Chandra, Sri Jyoti Prasad Agarwal has increased her anger. Though her grandfather didn’t like to attend freedom fighters meetings, Devi Barua says her aunt Mrs. Jonaki Devi Barua would have sent her secretly.
A renowned socialist, poet and freedom fighter Sri Jyoti Prasad Agarwal from Assam has founded an organization named death squad in Tejpur as a part of supporting the Quit India movement. Veeranari Kanakalata Barua also became active member of the death channel in the name of Birbala.
In protests against the arrests of national leaders, in various parts of the country, the death channel members decided to hoist the national flag on 1942 September 20 at the Gohapur police station. Veeranari Kanakalata Barua led the procession with the slogan of DRD holding the national flag.
British police forces just issued warnings not to move their team forward, they tried to block protesters. Police shootings at Kanakalata Barua, a hero who went forward without even counting police warnings. She didn’t leave the flag though. Another freedom fighter named Sri Mukunda Kakati, she stood up for the flag to touch the ground until she took the flag out of her hand. And then he was also shot by the police. Both of them fought for the freedom of the motherland and sacrificed their lives and got a heroic death. Yet their sacrifice did not go in vain. Another Swarajya fighter Sri Rampathi Raj Khova finally hoisted the national flag on the police station successfully.
The dedication of these young men is so high that they have overcame the fear of death as part of their protests with Swarajya’s desire. My personal opinion is that a history that doesn’t respect the sacrifices of these people which inspire future generations will remain incomplete. Inspiring stories of Indian Swarajya war heroes like heroic heroes Birbala Kanakalata need to be included in our history books.
