Food Safety and Standards authority of India (FSSAI) on Monday released the third food safety index for the year 2020-21. The report unveiled by Union Health Minister Shri Mansukh Mandaviya ranks the states on five parameters of food safety- Human Resource and Institutional Data, Compliance, Food Testing- Infrastructure and Surveillance, Training and Capacity Building, Consumer Empowerment.
Among the larger states Gujarat, Kerala and Tamil Nadu topped the index. Goa, Meghalaya and Manipur secured the top ranks among the small states. For the union territories, Jammu and Kashmir grabbed the top position followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Delhi. Himachal Pradesh and Odisha showed impressive progress by securing 6th place from 10th and 4th place from 13th respectively from the second food safety index 2018-19.
Assam jumped 2 spots from the previous ranking of 19th to 17th.
Felicitating the nine top ranking states Union Health Minister also flagged off 19 Mobile Food Testing Vans (Food Safety on Wheels) for supplementing food safety ecosystem across the country. The minister also launched Eat Right Research Awards and Grants for Research in Food Safety and Nutrition. A logo for Vegan foods for easy identification from non-vegan foods for the consumers to make informed choices was also launched on the occasion. Further 21 companies committed to reducing levels of Virgin plastics in the food and beverage industry and 24 food businesses pledged on becoming ‘Plastic Waste Neutral’.
